Zverev Takes On Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown

Overview

The occupational hazards of tournament pool play mean by this stage of the ATP Finals we’re often left puzzled, searching around for a computing device and striving to determine the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. But this evening's contest between Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is simple. This is a winner-takes-all affair: the victor earns a final four matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the unsuccessful competitor heads out.

Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the elite athlete is the more accomplished player, has claimed the title at this competition twice before and leads their head-to-head 6-3, securing victories in both the games they've played on an indoor hard court.

Yet … this type of playing field on which Felix has secured most of his championships, he is full of confidence after his impressive recovery against Shelton on recently and he defeated the German in the US Open early stage in late summer. Furthermore, the playing speed is higher in the host city than at the US Open venue, which is even more beneficial in AA’s favour.

Should Zverev be cautious, as he did against Sinner, and Felix aggressively challenges the German with his stinging serves and fearless play, it could well be the North American athlete – the one-time phenom who was previously positioned in front of the Spanish and Italian stars to take over from the legendary trio – who earns the uncertain distinction of playing against the top-ranked player on Saturday.

Play begins: at around 20:30 in the host city, 7.30pm GMT.
