We are verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow. Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing. The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital. We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage. Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were taken. Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
