Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the control of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle ahead.
