The Derry Prequel Series Debuts Next Sooner Than Planned on HBO's Digital Service

Excitement is building for the Stephen King adaptation the Derry series, that's been earning acclaim and weaving in themes from the broader King universe. Following the premiere, the broadcaster declared that the next chapter will premiere ahead of schedule, released fittingly for Halloween.

Premiere Shift Particulars

Starting on October 31 at 3 a.m. EST, episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will make its debut on HBO Max, before its linear broadcast. Subsequent episodes of the eight-episode season will premiere on Sunday nights on the network and streaming service, leading up to the season finale on the 14th of December.

Series Overview

Set in the Derry mythology, Welcome to Derry is inspired by King’s iconic novel while building upon the setting brought to life by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. The first It movie highlighted young characters battling terrifying threats, so it’s fitting that this show continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the first installment of the streaming show proves it intended to increase the tension, providing heightened horror than Muschietti’s films and setting a brutal tone for what's to come.

Story World and Concepts

Set in 1962, this show introduces a fresh cast of grown-ups and kids living in a apparently peaceful community hiding a dark secret. This place follows a cruel, recurring cycle—defined by hostility, discrimination, and otherworldly forces, as a terrifying being resurfaces each 27-year cycle. Although Welcome to Derry might seem like it leans too heavily to the films initially, what distinguishes the HBO Max series is its parallel storytelling—told from the perspectives of kids and grown-ups concurrently. Younger characters are particularly vulnerable to the entity's fear, but grown-ups aren’t spared dealing with their individual fears arising from local discrimination and hidden paranormal elements.

The series debuts on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
