The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season

The game developers has a special treat prepared for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Fans of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. According to key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously been a feature of Apex Legends for quite a while, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in the game for a while, but the movement isn't easy to pull off and a player would never know it's possible without external guides," Canavese explains. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so users can easily see when and how to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and introducing new ways to play for a much wider base."

Why Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk available to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says developers wants players to experience empowerment — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, observed what our players execute, and we said, 'What if we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" Mohan explains. "Since currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — you need to change controls and hit one-frame windows. We proposed, 'How about we create a polished version?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Movement is largely the name of the game in this season, with characters the gravity mage, Rampart, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will propel users upward much quicker than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and the ability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. However the spotlight is on aerial this Legend who's getting significant improvements now, with various adjustments applied to enhance her as stronger, faster, and deadlier.

"In my opinion many agree that her moment has arrived," says character developer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been top-tier in the past, but with the introduction of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's the game. This presented a really great opportunity for the team to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and essentially restore her to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore her competitive status in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team assessed each of her abilities and implemented some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing velocity during flight, and the jets themselves regenerates much quicker, allowing the player to remain longer aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag enemies who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts teammates skyward for repositioning or escape — now takes reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that players can choose to conserve resources, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, this location, receives a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that expands choke points and renders claiming the high ground more manageable. The developers state Apex Legends Season 27 focuses on giving players the tools they need to keep up with matches.

"Essentially, we were looking at the game's core identity as a movement shooter," says principal designer Josh Mohan.

Apex Legends the Amped season launches November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
