Released recently

Brisbane hasn't been a place that offers the English team badly required hope for the Ashes

Following the loss to Australia during the opening match, the visiting team must stir themselves before heading to the famous Gabba, a ground where the English haven't triumphed for decades

Players representing England have often become lambs to the slaughter at this challenging venue

Cook's Memorable Achievement

Among a recent history of English disappointments, aspirations and players is a source of inspiration delivered by an exceptional player

Today commemorates 15 years since Sir Alastair Cook mastered the Gabba through a defining 235 not out, rescuing the opening match during that famous series paving England's path toward their sole series victory in Australia in the past 38 years

Record-Breaking Performance

It commenced of his successful tour of Australia; three centuries totaling 766 runs

Cricket great Hammond stands as the only Briton who has made more runs during a Test series on Australian soil

England won 3-1, where each success through innings victories

They have not won a Test victory there since those glory days

Looking Back

"People overlook the difficult moments, the nervousness and anxiety involved in that achievement," Cook remembers

"I look back with pride. I made an important impact in a series when England won 3-1 in Australia where each victory came through innings wins"

Journey to Excellence

The path toward Australian glory started a year and a half before after that year's Ashes in England

Despite English victory, the opening batsman scored under 25 per innings with just one score over fifty

He desired better

"Despite cricket's collective nature, the individuality does make you feel that you must contribute adequately," he notes

Technical Transformation

Just 48 hours following the celebrations, he returned hitting hundreds and hundreds deliveries in practice under Graham Gooch's guidance

The initial results showed promise

The batsman achieved three centuries on overseas campaigns in South Africa and Bangladesh

Pivotal Instances

Upon his return to home soil for that year's summer, the left-hander performed poorly

In eight innings facing these opponents, his top innings was 29

Scoreless overnight following the second day's play during the final Test facing Pakistan at The Oval, Cook was convinced it might be his last Test innings ahead of potential omission

"I found myself in the hospitality area, trying to find the resolution through drinking," he reveals

Critical Moment

The 110-run innings secured his place for the Australian tour

England continued their preparations by winning two and drawing one of their warm-up games down under

As the opening match began in Brisbane, they encountered a Siddle hat-trick

Record-Breaking Stand

Shortly prior to the end of the third day, the opening pair opened England's second innings trailing by 221 runs

They reached 19-0 when play concluded and proceeded with an exhibition remembered in Ashes history

"I don't remember the messages, our conversations," says Cook

The left-handers added 188 together

The 235 without dismissal represented the top score by an Englishman down under since the 1930s

Complete Control

The English took advantage of an astonishing first morning in the second match in South Australia

Following Anderson's additional wicket the Australian batsman, the score read 2-3 and never recovered

Cook followed up his Brisbane success with 148 in a famous match featuring Pietersen's destruction of the Australian attack

The Final Triumph

Victory was possible the urn in Perth, only for Mitchell Johnson to foreshadow the havoc he would cause four years later

The subsequent events included perhaps England's single greatest day of Ashes cricket down under

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the 100,000-seater cathedral of sports down under, and on Boxing Day, the Australian team collapsed to 98 all out

"For ideal Boxing Days, this was it. Amazement prevailed at the end of the day," Cook remembers

Series Conclusion

Fuelled by the focus to claim victory, Cook was at it again at the SCG

His 189 lifted England to 644, their highest total on Australian soil

The uncertainty wasn't whether England would triumph the game and series, but the timing

"The environment was electric," Cook remembers

"When Tremlett got the final batsman to secure victory, it was a moment of pure elation"

Historical Significance

Cook was player of the series

The subsequent seven years of his cricket journey featured other milestones

After retiring internationally, he was honored for services to cricket
