Bruce Straley behind The Last of Us has unveiled his return to video games. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the debut from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on his past achievements centered around characters that learn and adapt. An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey Shown for the first time at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a narrative-driven exploration title. Players control Gertie, a hero that subverts typical power fantasies. The core idea stemmed from a desire to deconstruct the typical hero’s journey. "Imagine if you lacked traditional weapons? What if you were somehow encumbered? An aging witch, for instance?" asked the director. "The concept seemed incredibly compelling to explore the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about fighting your way through challenges, but it’s also about sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence." A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work Even though the title seems unfamiliar at first glance, its core innovation builds directly upon the technology pioneered in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor was inspired by a central inquiry: "How could one create Ellie more dynamic and responsive based on player actions?" The companion creature within this adventure transcends typical AI behavior. The director likens it to a learning entity that interacts with evolving behaviors. To begin with, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in playful hijinks. Then, it enters a playful state. Finally, it watches and learns grasping cause and effect. To illustrate: When the partner witnesses Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it learns the motion without knowing the purpose. Subsequently, it may attempt to collect nearby items and test fitting them, repeating what it saw. The 'why' is learned solely through accidental success an obstacle, creating a genuine learning moment. A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative This complex system aims to foster individualized narrative moments. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story. "Each effort to insert traditional three-act structure within this framework, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The liveliness in this partnership is that each individual player experiences different sparks and narrative unlike anyone else's." By prioritizing player-defined experiences, Coven of the Chicken Foot marks both an evolution and a bold new direction from Straley's iconic past work. This adventure remains targeting PC platforms.
