A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence close to the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who ran away following the blast was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene revealed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
