A senior Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The attack occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Investigators mentioned that one possible explanation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Site of the Attack

Teams have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a southern district of the capital.

Reports indicate the blast occurred in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other notable incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a informant earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not officially confirmed as a matter of official stance.

The war has been marked by clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
